Wrecker

One thing I noticed since I started playing the Facebook game Avengers Alliance, is a renewal of my interest for certain characters previously released in the Marvel Universe line by Hasbro that I had initially passed on.

One such character is Marvel’s Wrecker, released back with Series 2 as the 20th figure in that collection. Wrecker is a relatively obscure villain that first saw the light in the Thor comic books several years ago, and to this day the character remains rather uncomplicated, being fundamentally a common thug elevated to supervillain due to mere chance.

However, this action figure is anything but plain. To start with, Wrecker is an entirely unique mold, with a lot of sculpted costume elements added onto what appears to be the same muscular male buck used for characters like Cable and Thor. The head is quite striking, as Wrecker seems to be wearing a knit purple mask and he has an openly disdainful grimace.

Articulation is quite extensive, consisting of:

• Pegged hinge neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Swivel biceps.

• Hinged elbows.

• Swivel forearms.

• Floating torso.

• Ball jointed hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Double hinged knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

Of these, only the ankles have trouble moving the feet up and down because the sculpt gets in the way, but overall I am pretty satisfied that these joints are there at all, even if they mostly work as regular swivels.

The paintjob on Wrecker is deceptively simple, as most of the figure is made from green and purple plastics with a few black, silver and purple details painted along with lighter green accents. However, the uniform also received a very judicious shading wash that enhances the overall look of the character.

The quality of the face paint application was fairly variable in the several figures I saw at the store when I bought this. One of the reasons why I hadn’t actively sought out this figure back when it was released was precisely because on a lot of them the paint was so poorly applied that Wrecker seemed to have a serious case of bleeding gums, but this time I guess I lucked out finding one I liked.

Since this is a Series 2 figure, Wrecker ships with a personalized Marvel Universe display base, a paper envelope with the corresponding H.A.M.M.E.R. File and the source of his powers, his trusty crowbar. The crowbar is molded from dull silver plastic, and it also received a shading wash to make it look worn.

In the end, I was quite pleased for how this figure turned out, to the point where I might even entertain the notion of tracking down the rest of his gang, the Wrecking Crew, if doing so proves not to be much of a hassle.

I've been collecting action figures since the original Kenner Star Wars days. Nowadays, I still collect pretty much anything that catches my eye.

As soon as I saw you had written this, I thought Avengers Alliance. I kind of dig him.

I still wish they would do some sort of pack for the game. Maybe a Mail Away Agent.

That could be interesting, sort of like that time they had the Steel Brigade promo. I guess Playdom should approach Hasbro or Disney about getting an action figure pack inspired by the game.
