Lieutenant Thire (Clone Wars)

Well, today I’ll be reviewing Clone Lieutenant Thire, from the Clone Wars gift set released back in 2011. Lieutenant Thire had already been released both as a single carded figure (2009) and in a two-pack with another member of his team (2010), but since those releases are long gone now, I had to get a boxed set to get him.

I’ll come clean right from the start saying that Thire was the main reason I decided to buy the whole set. Both the included Yoda and the Droideka turned out to be better than I expected, but after the articulation cut-backs Hasbro enacted on the animated Clone Wars line, I was more than primed to hunt down as many of the super-articulated clones I could find.

Thire is pretty much a kit bash using pieces from previously released clones. The armor is the early style, with clean lines and sharp detail sculpted in. The helmet is removable and underneath there is also an animated style clone head, with the characteristic broad cheekbones and aquiline nose.

After a couple of years with limited articulation, Thire seems amazingly articulated by comparison. Lieutenant Thire is one of those figures that really showcases how much Hasbro was willing to put into this line back then, with an articulation design composed of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Pegged hinge wrists.

• Floating torso.

• Swivel hips.

• Pegged hinge knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

The hands can bend up & down (right hand) or in & out (left hand) in addition of turning at the wrist, which I had almost forgot how awesome it was. The range at the hips is not very broad but it was something to be expected given the armor design.

Since Thire is part of the Coruscant Guard, his armor is adorned with dark red patterns applied all over limbs and torso. The paint application is reasonably good, with just a few wavy edges here and there, but the paint job on the face is actually quite neat.

Thire’s pauldron and helmet are removable and the helmet has a visor that swivels up or down. For weaponry, Thire comes equipped with a couple of small pistols that he can carry in the holsters on his belt and a larger spring-loaded launcher with the corresponding projectile. Also included is a silver plastic display base for Thire, his Galactic Battle Game stat card and a blue die to be shared with the other figures in the box.

Lieutenant Thire is one of the best figures ever to come out in the Clone Wars line. The one thing that really caught my attention, is that even the articulation pins are matched with the color of the surrounding plastic, something that not even the figures in the Vintage Collection can get right sometimes.
