Well, I found a few of the Avengers Assemble figures at the gift shop area of a local restaurant last week, and while I was waiting to be seated I decided to buy the SHIIELD Gear version of Marvel’s resident archer, Hawkeye.
Phoenix Bow Hawkeye appears to be inspired by the new animated TV show, but in fact, the action figure is essentially a retool of the movie version released a couple of years ago for the Avengers movie line. The newly sculpted pieces are the head and the non-removable double quiver.
The head sculpt has Clint Barton wearing sunglasses, which I guess would be the modern, more plausible alternative to the carnival mask he used in the comics. The face itself is handsomely generic, with features sharply defined.
The figures in the SHIELD Gear assortment are supposed to be the ones with the better articulation scheme, which in the case of Hawkeye translates to the exact same articulation design he had in the Avengers movie line, consisting of:
• Pegged hinge shoulders.
• Pegged hinge elbows.
• Pegged hinge hips.
• Upper thigh swivels.
• Pegged hinge knees.
Again, this articulation design is actually not too bad, but could have been so much better if they just had added wrist swivels.
The paintjob in this version of Hawkeye is rather simple this time, as the figure was molded directly in black and flesh colored plastic. All of the paint apps on the uniform are limited to blocks of solid color with accents applied in silver and metallic purple paint, which for the most part are properly applied.
Hawkeye comes with just one bow featuring the same spring-operated launcher used for the movie version. Also included are the same three projectiles, only this time they are cast in translucent blue plastic.
Overall, I like this Hawkeye figure just a little bit more than the Avengers movie version, mostly because of the unpainted plastic skin on the face, which I think simply looks better, even if both figures are very similar in any other aspect.
