Cobra Trooper (Dollar General)

June 13, 2012 | By More

Out of all the Dollar General figures this one might be the most surprising. A generic Cobra Trooper in black. Seems simple enough. But the execution here is pretty darn good.

Appearance:

Where the black Cobra Commander looks formal, the black on the basic trooper makes him look like an elite guard or a night squad trooper.

The ironic thing is that we’ve seen all these pieces before. There’s no new ground here. But, as the a number of the other figures we’ve seen before, these generic pieces come together to create a pretty a nice trooper.

The black helmet is emblazoned with a silver chevron. This gives me the feel of elite unit. My one complaint with this figure is that it is painted off center on mine. Not a lot, mind you. Just enough that once I noticed it, I couldn’t not see it.

Under the helmet is a pretty good head. This a newer updated of the generic masked Cobra head. Instead of the stylish, sexy clean shaven bald head, he has a tight military looking haircut. They could have went with black hair here to keep the paint aps to a minimum, and they didn’t. The brown hair and the face are pretty well painted considering the $6 price point.

The chest is a smooth flak jacket style. It reminds of the Zombie Viper chest, but I’m not sure if that is what it is exactly. What is cool is the large silver Cobra logo. This silver fits well with the Cobra Commander. I really am digging the color scheme with these guys.

The web gear is fairly generic, but works well here. Since their original versions, Cobra Troopers have had web gear and this works well as homage. I love the fact that you can see a fair amount of the logo through it. It even has a bit of paint on the buckle and shoulder straps.

We’ve seen this legs before. They are a pretty good representation of uniformed pants with boots. I still have issues get them to stand real well, as a I suspect the right leg is just a tad longer than the right.

Along with the legs, we get the holster that has the silencer loop on the front. It’s a nice feature, but he doesn’t come with a silencer. Well for that matter, he doesn’t come with a pistol at all. I really wish they had an alternate ammo pouch or closed holster for some variation when they use these legs.

He also has what has became a staple for the modern figures, removable knee pads. Yes, they good. However, I have to ask, do they attach with Velcro? There doesn’t seem to be any straps to attach them. It’s a small nit, so I’ll give them a pass. I also believe some military/police uniforms have built in attachments.

 Fun:

As I’ve alluded to above, he’s a little light on accessories. There are really two main ones, the helmet and gun.

I’m sure Gary from What’s On Joe Mind? will be glad to see him armed with an AK-47. Instead of a more traditional wood stock, this rifle is outfitted with a light weight tubular affair. I have to say that I’ve been a bit spoiled by the Marauder stuff I’ve been looking at recently and think this piece is a tad bit light on detail.

The one cool thing they included here that I was a bit surprised to see on a lower price point figure was the extended wrist articulation.  Really nice added feature.

Overall:

Either from Marauder or other figures, I can fill in his gaps in weapons. So I’m not really concerned about his lack of accessories. That said this is a great basic trooper figure.

Like I said above, if they were more readily available, they would make a great squad of night trooper or elite guards. At $6, probably one of the better troop building values out there.

Did not realize he had the silencer holster, did you try a MJ silencer in that by any chance? I think it’s a great re-use of parts to put together a pretty tight figure, hope to find one of these someday…

I’m still looking for you. I haven’t tried it yet, I will give it a try in the next day or so.
