Ultimate Hawkeye

One figure I never got to see back when the first wave of Avengers action figures started to show up in stores, was this version of Marvel’s Hawkeye. I had pretty much lost hope of ever finding it but, thanks to the holidays restock, some local stores received a few more cases of the wave 1 figure by Hasbro.

This is, of course, the Ultimate’s Universe version, so the costume design tries to look less cartoony than the classic one, but in the case of Ultimate Hawkeye, it still doesn’t look especially realistic either.

This Hawkeye wears dark purple tights with brown boots, belt with two holsters, a dual backpack and a mask that leaves the top of his head bare. In terms of the sculpting, it is actually a very good rendition of the character and there is a pretty nice amount of details sculpted on both the costume and the gear. While the backpack is not removable, the neck covering piece can be removed by popping out the head.

Articulation is very similar to that of the Ultimate Thor released in this same line, consisting of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Pegged hinge knees.

While articulation isn’t great, at least all of the joints present work as intended. I would still say that swivel wrists would have been nice to have, but at this stage in the game I’m just glad that this guy can cross his arms in front of his body.

The paint applications are generally good on Hawkeye, although it is advisable to check the paint on the arms and the logo on the chest before committing to buy. There are not a lot of colors on this figure and practically no shading was applied, so it is only a matter of picking up the cleanest paintjob available.

This Hawkeye comes armed with a couple of different pistols that more or less fit into the holsters at his sides, made from very pliable rubber. Also included is a small crossbow, and a large spring-loaded accessory with three different colored projectiles.

This launcher looks just awful, being too large, too ugly and too cheap-looking. It would not merit further mention if not because, unfortunately, the backpack on Hawkeye has two holes drilled lengthwise through each pack to carry around the extra projectiles, marring somewhat the overall look of the figure.

Leaving the accessory woes aside, this Ultimate Hawkeye figure is actually quite nice and fun to have, and I certainly consider it to be amongst the better ones from this line.

Errex Score: 80/100

Here’s the problem I have. Archery arm guards go on the inside of the arm not the outside. Of course, he doesn’t need them for a crossbow, still seems wrong to be me though.
