Ultimate Armour Iron Man
With the hype surrounding the upcoming third Iron Man movie, and the reports of stores finally getting some new product, I went to a store near my work to get a close look at these new-fangled Assembler Iron Man figures.
I got to the store, found a complete wall covered with the figures, spent a while perusing them and decided that I won’t be getting any of them.
Instead, I decided to go back and fill up some gaps in my Iron Man 2 collection, even if that meant that I had to go Downtown to snag this Ultimate Armour Iron Man from an outlet/discount type store.
This Iron Man was released as part of the last wave of Iron Man 2 action figures by Hasbro a couple of years ago. The mold is the exact same they used for the Mk.3 and a couple of Concept Armors, with only a different paintjob.
Articulation in the IM2 line was excellent and seeing it now after the drastic cutbacks Hasbro has applied to their Marvel movie lines is a reminder of how easily we as collectors take things for granted. Ultimate Armour Iron Man has:
• Pegged hinge shoulders.
• Pegged hinge elbows.
• Swivel wrists.
• Floating torso.
• Pegged hinge hips.
• Upper thigh swivels.
• Double hinge knees.
• Pegged hinge ankles.
Given the character design, not all of these joints have a full range of movement and some feel rather loose, but as a whole, the figure is fun to mess around with.
As I mentioned, the paintjob is what makes this figure worth getting. Although the shape of the armor is the same as in previous figures, the color selection is clearly inspired by the way Iron Man looks in the Ultimates comic books. The color palette consists mostly in bright silver and gunmetal sections on the body with a few cherry red accents on head, upper torso and limbs, as well as a golden faceplate.
Although the color scheme looks real nice, the actual application is slightly sloppy all around, especially at the areas painted in the gloss red finish but then again, it took Hasbro some time after this line ended to figure out how to apply this kind of finishes with some degree of consistency.
Ultimate Armour Iron Man came with a silver plastic display base, three armor cards and a spring-loaded launcher with a blue projectile. In hindsight, it seems to me that the armor card gimmick was somehow a precedent for the 2013 Assemblers line, seeing as you could mix and match cards from different figures to produce different types of armor, but I digress.
So, Ultimate Armour Iron Man turned out as a great action figure with a good color scheme but rather average paint application, but even with that, is still is a far superior product than what Hasbro is producing nowadays.

I kind of dig this armor. It’s sleek and functional.
Nice write up, bud!
