Mickey Mouse (Vinyl Figure)

October 19, 2012 | By More

My birthday is one week after the opening Walt Disney World. Ironically, when WDW turned 25, I turned 25, etc..  So, I feel a small connection to Mickey and Co. It doesn’t hurt their Imagineers do some pretty cool stuff.

When I was much younger, my Dad was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida with the Air Force. During that time, I remember visiting Disney a few times. This was back in the time when they had E-tickets that had nothing to do with electricity.

During those visits, my parents bought me some mixed media Disney character figures. They were a mix of plastic, vinyl and fabric. The series covered most of the main characters.

For most of my childhood, they were high up on a shelf in my room. I never really played with them, they just hung out and looked cool. Much later on, they were packed away.

I came across these recently, and thought I would share them with you. And what better place to start than Mickey Mouse?

Honestly, he’s more of a mixed media figure than a vinyl one. The body and limbs are a harder plastic and the head is softer vinyl.

For a toy figure the cloth outfit is composed of shorts and a polo. The shirt has small snaps in the back, so if you want can take it off to have more the vintage mouse look.

The head really wouldn’t work for that though. This head is more the style of the late sixties and seventies. The flesh colored face and style of the eyes are what reminds me of the more modern Mickey.

Well, as modern as he can be at his nearly 30+ year old age. He shows some wear from storage and his hands have yellowed a bit. I’ve seen a lot worse from stuff made in the early 2000’s though.

I wish I had more to tell you about him. I really do. When I dug him out of a box, I did what everybody would do and hit the search engines. Nada. The amount of Mickey collectibles and collectors websites doesn’t help the situation.

I will say that I consulted the good folks over at the Disney, Indiana podcast. They weren’t able to shed much more light on Mickey unfortunately. (However, if you are looking for a Disney podcast, their’s is one that comes with my highest recommendation. Tons of park knowledge dropped on you!)

I’ll probably highlight a few more of these in the months to come. If you have any memories of these vintages figures drop me a comment below!

That is a really cool toy!

Even though the sculpting standards were not as exacting as today, most manufacturers went the extra mile to offer the best quality they could produce.

Compared to other things from around the same time, the sculpt isn’t bad. Turning cartoons into 3d back then wasn’t exactly a perfect.

Pretty cool to have something you can connect with so closely, nice piece man.
