Storm Surge Armor Iron Man

Storm Surge Armor (4)

Well, today I’ll be reviewing yet another Iron Man action figure that I find to be more deserving of being a part of your collection than any of the current 4-inch Iron Man 3 offerings by Hasbro, even though it is a repaint of a figure we got a couple of years back.

Storm Surge Armor (2)The Storm Surge Armor Iron Man was released in the Avengers Assemble sub-line and is the exact same mold used a couple of years ago for the Deep Sea Armor from the Iron Man 2 Concept Series. This armored suit is much bulkier than the general-purpose Iron Man suits with most of the extra mass concentrated on the upper torso, forearms and calves.

The suit has a very nice amount of detail in the form of grooves and panel lines and the overall design favors smooth, curved shapes over the sharper angular shapes found in the other Iron Man suits from the same series.

Articulation in the Storm Surge Iron Man suit is pretty extensive and for the most part blends in perfectly with the character design, consisting of:

Storm Surge Armor (3)• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Floating torso.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Double hinged knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

Given the bulkiness of several elements in this armor, there are some heavy restriction to the movement range at the hips and ankles and evidently there are no wrist joints at all but, surprisingly, the rest of the joints function almost unimpaired, providing a fairly decent number of posing options.

Storm Surge Armor (9)The main difference between the Deep Sea Armor and this Storm Surge Armor lies in the paintjob. To be honest, the main reason I never got the DS version was that I did not really like the color scheme, but painted in the classic red and gold pattern was difficult for me to resist.

While the paint application are much neater than in the Iron Man 2 line, there were still a few minor issues here and there, like paint rubs and some inconsistencies in the coverage of the glossy red paint, but I like the overall appearance, especially the color combination with the warm gold hue, red and gunmetal panels.

Storm Surge Iron Man does not include pack-ins like the cards or the plastic base from the Iron Man 2 figures, but it does come with a spring-loaded missile launcher that can be mounted on either forearm, as well as a translucent blue projectile.

After seeing all the armors in the Iron Man 3 movie, I was more than willing to get some of the more exotic-looking suits and certainly, the Storm Surge Iron Man did not disappoint.

I like the bulkier armors, in general. I really kind of dig this one.
