Hogun

For some strange reason, I keep stumbling upon the odd figure from already cancelled lines at flea markets and discount stores. My latest acquisition this time was Hogun The Grim, one of the Warriors Three from the first Thor movie line.

Hogun was part of the second wave of figures that never really got significantly distributed in Mexico City, so I didn’t hesitate to pick him up at a local bazaar.

Hogun’s costume is an interesting design, as it seems to incorporate less metal plating than the regular asgardian clothing sported by his companions. In fact, it does seem to me that much of the overall style is based on the uniforms of the ancient Chinese terracotta army found in the Shaanxi province in 1974.

The head sculpt is very good and does a good job of conveying the ethnicity of the character as seen on the screen, even though I would not say it actually resembles actor Tadanobu Asano.

Like most of the figures in this line, Hogun gets a pretty good deal of articulation in the form of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Floating torso.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Double hinge knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

The head joint functions mostly as a regular swivel, though, and the removable cloak hampers the range of movement at the shoulders but as a whole, the joints work reasonably well considering the costume design. One thing I noticed is that all the joints feel unusually tight, maybe because the plastic this figure is made of seems to be slightly less flexible than it was on other figures from this same line.
The paintjob on my figure was very good overall. Hogun has a rather somber color scheme, combining black and charcoal paint applications over dark blue plastic. There are a few details painted in metallic colors that help offset the darkness as well as highlight the different costume elements.

As far as accessories, Hogun comes with a small, spherical mace, his cloak and a very large double –headed axe. Each blade of the axe-head can be taken out of the weapon to be used separately and the shaft can also double as an ornate cudgel.

I must say that I did not really care all that much about the Warriors Three in the first Thor movie, but Hogun here makes for a really nice addition to any Marvel collection.
