Damon Baird

The second figure I picked up from the 1/18 Gears of War line by NECA is Damon Baird. Again, not having played the game, all I know about the character is what it says in the back of the card, which is actually very little besides of him being a quick thinker, somewhat of a tactical and mechanical genius, as well as having insubordination issues.

The figure itself is every bit as detailed as team mate Clayton Carmine, and even though they wear similar outfits there is actually no parts re-use between the two, mostly because Damon turned out to be noticeably shorter and slightly less bulky than Carmine.

Baird goes with a bare head and the face sculpt is actually quite a good representation of the in-game design.

Being something of a combat engineer, Damon has a number of leather pouches sculpted as add-ons over the regular armor design.

Baird has the same articulation model as Fenix and Carmine, consisting of:

• Barbell mounted head.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Hinged elbows.

• Pegged hinge wrists.

• Barbell mounted torso.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Hinged knees.

• Upper calf swivels.

Thanks to the slightly less bulky frame, Damon Baird is actually able to hold his weapon two-handed, a feat made possible also because the model of lancer he comes with is slightly longer and doesn’t have an electric saw under the barrel.

The paint job on Damon Baird is quite good. The leather bits in the outfit are painted in a variety of browns and still manage to show off all of the tiny sculpted details.

The armor plates on his chest are painted in a light silver color with a few color accents, but were also given a wash to achieve a tarnished, pockmarked appearance.
Damon’s skin was painted in an ashen hue that doesn’t quite look natural at first, but once out of the package it is possible to make out are subtle color gradients that really add to the overall appearance.

Baird comes armed with a Retro Lancer, which I assume is the older version of the weapon Clayton Carmine comes with. The weapon is painted in black and silver, and has a peg to attach it to Damon’s back.

Overall, Damon Baird turned out to be a much more fun figure tan Carmine simply by being able to grab his gun properly, but as a whole, I am actually liking this line very much.
