Salacious Crumb (Star Wars Buddies)

June 11, 2011 | By More

Last week I checked out what may be the best representation from the “Star Wars Buddies” first wave. This time I’m looking at one that is less than perfect, Salacious Crumb. Jabba’s little cackling pet has his fans, and I’m sure some folks love him, though.

Let me get this out of the way. I think he looks like a bit like Gary Shandling. Maybe it’s just me, but the sour look on his face just gives me that impression.

Salacious here is definitely falling well into the bean bag critter category. Loose limbs and a butt full of beads, he’s got very similar construction to a Beanie Baby.

Compared to Wicket, the Muppetesque look of Salacious is obtained with no other molded elements than the eyes. The beady little yellow orbs give him that him that evil look beneath a V shaped brow.

The tufts of fur around his neck and on the top of his head are a bit like regular fantasy fur. There not quite film accurate, but he’d look odd without them.

There is of course a tail for Salacious. It’s done in a loose style like the rest of his limbs.

Overall:

Mr. Crumb is very stylized here. I would have thought some pleather would have been a better look for him, as I’ve never thought of him as warm and cuddly. But, if your tastes run towards the dark side he might just serve you better than his Beanie Baby teddy bear cousins.

Man, these things are so bizarre. I realize that this sort of cross-polination worked great for Star Wars in the late 90’s, but some of the things they came up with are just too strange.

Sadly, I can’t find the Jabba one. Apparently, I lost interest after the first series since I don’t have any of the episode 1 human characters. I just find those a little creepy.
