Summit City Comic Con Spotlight – Michael Schwartz
I thought I’d do something a little different this year, and give some of the talented folks a bit of a shout out.
To start this series off, I thought I’d spotlight Michael Scwartz. Michael is pretty cool dude and is the creator of Oceanverse.
Oceanverse, to quote the website, “chronicles the adventures of Clayton Hemmings and his crew aboard the Red Herring, a submarine in search of the mysteries of the sea.” The story really takes me back to all the things I love about adventure. Submarines and exploring. Isn’t that what we all loved as a kid about Lost in Space, Star Trek and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?
Michael’s art for the webcomic is pretty much the classic comic strip style. I really love the way this is retro and new at the same time. Sadly, Micheal’s reached the end of the webcomic for now. But fear not dear reader, they are still at his site for the reading though: Oceanverse And if you prefer the printed version of comic, you can get Oceanverse issues 1-5 at DCBS: Click here.
However, Michael carries his love for life under the sea in a different direction as well. I picked up his small “Funnybook Fish” book from him at the con. Each page has a superhero depicted as a fish or other form of aquatic life. The fish range from Hellboy to Mr. Fantastic. The detail is pretty cool and there’s often visual clues to the character in the background. The Batman Fish has a Penny and Joker playing card stuck in the sea bed.
If you get a chance, check out Michael’s work. You’ll be submerged in adventure in no time!
