Deluxe Frost Giant

November 7, 2011 | By More

Right off the gate, I knew that the one figure I would like to have, from the 2011 Thor line by Hasbro, was the Deluxe Frost Giant. This figure appeared at stores right alongside the regular basic characters in this collection, and for me it was pretty clear  that from the two Frost Giants offered by Hasbro, the Deluxe version was the one to have, even though I was not quite convinced at the higher price point.

The Deluxe Frost Giant figure uses the exact same mold as the single carded Giant, only with more accessories and a different paintjob.

The basic plastic color is a darker blue with  an even darker blue gradients applied to provide shading. The Frost Giants display a series of tattos or ritual scarifications, which in this version are painted in a lighter blue color, making this figure looks as if it were a negative version of the regular Frost Giant.

The sculpted detail pops out more in the darker color scheme even if it is not entirely 10% screen accurate, but this Frost Giant has the additional advantage that his tattoos are painted both front AND back, while the regular version only has the tattoos painted at the front of the figure.

This Giant wears the same rubber loincloth as the basic version, only in the package it is placed backwards, no doubt to sell the illusion that this is an entirely new piece, which is not the case, but at least now it’s molded in a richer coppery color plastic.

In the frist online reviews I found about this figure, there were some complaints about the softness of the plastic used for the limbs and the looseness of some of the joints, but on my figure the plastic feels just right and all of the articulation points feel nice and tight, possibly indicating that my figure comes from a different production lot. The Deluxe Frost Giant has the following joints:

Ball jointed head (which works more as a simple swivel).

Hinged neck (nicely picking up the slack from the head joint).

Pegged hinge shoulders.

Pegged hinge elbows.

Swivel wrists.

Floating torso.

Pegged hinge hips.

Upper thigh swivels.

Double hinged knees.

Pegged hinge ankles.

All of the joints work fairly well and the Deluxe Frost Giant has great balance, which in turn helps in achieving dynamic poses, even while carrying his accessories.

Like all Deluxe figures, this Giant comes with some gimmicky pieces, this time these are a couple of icicle launchers that clip onto each forearm and shoot a couple of projectiles, all molded in the same hue of translucent blue plastic.

Surprisingly, the launchers don’t look all that bad and they even shoot with enough force to topple an action figure, something that isn’t all that common these days.

Additionally, the Deluxe Frost giant also comes with an ice helm, an ice shield (that looks more like a ginormous ice blade) and an ice headed maul. These are all the exact same accessories that come with the basic carded Frost giant, although there is one other extra weapon included in the Deluxe version, and this is an ice-headed axe.

I got my DX Frost Giant at about 50% Off the MSRP, about four months after seeing the movie (I just didn’t feel like dishing out the full price for any of these), but I’d certainly recommend you pick this one over the regular Giant, if you haven’t already.

I kind of dig the colors on this guy. There are still full price here.
