Volstagg

Hasbro released Volstagg as part of the Thor movie line last year. He was part of a wave that apparently didn’t see a wide release anywhere, so I was fairly surprised to find him in a street vendor’s cardboard box in one of my trips downtown in Mexico City.

In the movie, Volstagg is played by actor Ray Stevenson, who also played the Punisher in the Punisher: Warzone movie and Titus Pullo in the Rome miniseries, so it was something of a surprise to see him in a decidedly lighter role.

The Volstagg action figure is well detailed, clad in what appears to be casual wear for asgardians, which is to say, ornate plate mail for the torso and leather everywhere else. The costume design is reasonably close to what we see in the movie although the coloration is slightly off, in my opinion.

The head sculpt is pretty good I think and goes to prove that the guys at Hasbro can sculpt realistic looking hair, an art that seems to elude them these days, along with putting proper articulation on their figures.

Volstagg has the whole super articulation design that was the norm for the Marvel movie-inspired characters up until the release of the Avengers line, and consists of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Floating torso.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Double hinged knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

Sure, due to the character design some of these joints have their range of motion slightly impaired, but in my book it is preferable to have a joint, even if it can’t bend or rotate all the way, than not having a joint at all.

Volstagg paintjob is reasonably well executed, with each color applied within their spots and no coverage issues. What’s more, the armor sports some decorations that mimic inlaid bands of metal at the back.

Volstagg is armed with a battleaxe of peculiar design that sports four blades, but was also given a large, gimmicky contraption that sports very intricate detailing, but makes absolutely no sense.

This “battle hammer” looks like a giant, old time insecticide pump, and pulling on the handle makes the weapon heads to turn. I must admit that the thing works pretty well, although it is probably one of the less useful add-ins I have seen in quite a while.

Taking all into consideration, Volstagg is a pretty decent action figure and I’m guessing he could even fit in as a rather tall dwarf with the upcoming The Hobbit action figure line.

Errex Score: 82/100

I like him, but with the beard he reminds of either a LOTD dwarf or Vultan from Flash Gordon.
