Legends of the West Horse

March 1, 2013 | By More

Well you can’t have a line of Western figures and not have horses. And Legends of the West had a couple of different horses. The basic one came with a molded saddle as a companion to the single carded figures.

The horse has a  pretty good look. If anything, the horse might be better sculpted that figures in the line.

The saddle has a fair amount of detail to it. It doesn’t really fit with what you expect from the Old West. I’d expect something much simpler and utilitarian. At the bottom of the saddle are two stirrups attached with metal pins. If you buy one of these loose look for these. They come out really easy.

Where the sculpt of the horse is well done, including the bridle elements. However, the paint doesn’t do it justice. The spots on the horse look a bit more like painted camo and no where is there a crisp line. It would be cool to see one of these in the hands of a good customizer.

The amount of articulation on these horses is the big surprise. There’s three simple joints on each leg and head can pivot up and down. To be fair, it’s almost too much articulation. It can be difficult to get them to stand on there own with anything less than a straight leg pose. There are no peg holes in any of the feet, so you aren’t able to get any action poses without hand support.

Overall:

These horses are really the gems in the line if you ask me. The articulation and sculpt are decent. The only real let down is the paint. Of course, paint can be fixed. Considering this line was only slightly above rack toy quality, these horses are a fun find of the 70’s.

This one is dark brown with tan spots. There are couple of other variations for the saddled horse. A white horse with reddish brown spots and a black horse with white spots and saddle. At some point in the future, I’ll post about them.

Now, that is a really cool toy horse. I wish there were more companies manufacturing horse in this scale, as I have been kicking myself for not getting the one from the Indiana Jones line a few years ago.

I need to review the vintage Butch and Sundance horses, which were the basis for the vintage Indy horse.
