Iron Man (Marvel Universe Series 1)

MU Iron Man

Well, oddly enough, one figure I was missing in my Marvel Universe collection until a few weeks ago was precisely the first ever Iron Man suit released in this line.

MU Iron Man (5)I failed to get it because the first few figures I ever saw at stores had rather conspicuous paint rubs or misaligned eyes and after a few weeks, the figure simply vanished from the pegs and so I thought that I would never find it again. Besides, it is not like Hasbro didn’t release other Iron Man suits using this same mold almost in every subsequent wave of figures.

The thing that makes this version noteworthy to me, is that it was released around the same time the first Iron Man movie premiered, so it was pretty much the only Iron Man figure in this scale available, although the armor design was nowhere near to what was shown on the screen.

The armor design seem to draw from several comics, and being Iron Man, the entire figure consists on wholly original pieces, meaning that this was a rather expensive mold to produce, which explains also the number of straight repaints released afterwards.

This Iron Man sculpt sports more injected-plastic joints than the regular contemporary Marvel Universe bodies, although the level of articulation remains comparable. This Iron Man has:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Swivel forearms.

• Floating torso.

• Ball jointed hips.

• Pegged hinge knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

Surprisingly, the character design hinders articulation less than I had expected. The shoulder pads are separate pieces that clip over the joints and give ample space to move, while the lower leg armor flares outward and is made of a pliable enough material that allows the feet to move reasonably well.

The paintjob on my figure turned out OK, with only a few minor blemishes on the glossy metallic red sections. The gold paint used for the thighs and biceps was applied very consistently, but there are slight differences in tone that seem to indicate the use of paints from different production lots, although the overall result is still quite nice.

Hailing from Series 1 in the Marvel Universe line, this version of Iron man comes with a translucent yellow plastic attachment that has been used way too many times over the years and the then ubiquitous tan envelope containing the character’s “Fury File”.

I must say that even after all this time, this is one version of Iron Man I like quite a bit, and one that is definitely better than anything Hasbro has been cranking out for the Iron Man 3 line in this scale.

I don’t know about that head. It looks a little too alien like to me.

Kind of like an insect, with those mandible thingies. 😉
