Black Adam

Last Christmas I got me one of the Injustice: Gods Among Us figure 2-packs, featuring Aquaman and Black Adam. I have already reviewed Aquaman and I was quite impressed with him but: What about Black Adam? Well, read all about it in today’s review.

Black Adam was sculpted by Paul Harding and manufactured by DC Collectibles. The figure is based on the appearance the character has in the videogame Injustice: Gods Among Us, developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive for a number of gaming platforms.

Black Adam is depicted in a suit not too dissimilar to his modern look. Apparently, the aesthetic guidelines for the costume designs called for adding as much adornments as possible.

On Black Adam this means that his costume is crisscrossed with panel lines strategically placed to enhance the look of certain muscle groups, as well as very ornate pieces of gear like the boots and gauntlets.

Underneath all the sculpted detail, it is possible to discern a very muscular physique of heroic proportions and his face is nicely sculpted, with very strong facial features.

Both Black Adam and Aquaman have the same articulation model, consisting of:

• Barbell mounted head.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Upper biceps swivel.

• Hinged elbows.

• Forearm swivel.

• Barbell mounted upper torso.

• Hinged lower torso.

• Ball jointed hips.

• Lower thigh swivels.

• Double hinged knees.

• Upper calf swivels.

• Hinged ankles.

The upper torso articulation on my figure has a very limited range of motion, but despite this, Black Adam is every bit as fun to play with as his set companion.

The paintjob on Black Adam is less flashy than Aquaman’s, but also perfectly applied. The suit is painted in a very dark blue with a metallic sheen to it that looks very slick, with the chest emblem, belt, boots and bracers painted in a rich, creamy golden hue. Additionally, gloves and boots have small brown sections painted to simulate leather.

The face paint is also nicely done. The haughty, disdainful facial expression is already sculpted, but the addition of color really enhances and brings it to life.

Lastly, I want to comment on the issue of scale. These figures are manufactured in a strictly 1:18 scale, which means they will look rather short next to the more prevalent Hasbro offerings. They are still consistent with most of the figures in the old Infinite Heroes line from Mattel, but the style is completely different.

Even though as a character, Black Adam doesn’t hold the same appeal for me as Aquaman, there is no denying that this rendition of him is a worthy addition to my collection.
