Quinlan Vos (CW36)

I never quite got Quinlan Vos. He seems derivative of so many other characters from the Star Wars Expanded Universe, but that doesn’t seem to prevent him from being made into action figures over and over.

Quinlan Vos (CW36) appeared only once in the Clone Wars TV Series, and that was apparently all it took for Hasbro to come up with yet another version of the character.

Now, to be honest, his appearance in the animated line is pretty decent. His costume seems to be based off the Dark horse comic books, with the sleeveless tunic and tabard, but for the TV series he is made to wear a gorget and a pauldron on his right shoulder.

The overall body shape is sculpted very thin and wiry, with the bulkier, dreadlocked hair glued on top of the head. The face sculpt is really well done, although much of the detail gets obscured either by the hair or the paintjob.

Quinlan Vos got an unusual amount of articulation for a Jedi figure in this line, possibly as a test to see if it was feasible and cost-effective to have such a lithe figure articulated with:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Pegged hinge elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Swivel waist.

• Pegged hinge hips.

• Pegged hinge knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

• Rocker feet.

While the upper torso articulation may not be particularly impressive, the leg and feet articulation is, allowing Vos to adopt deep, dynamic stances and keep his soles firmly planted on the ground. My only annoyance with the articulation is that the range of movement on his right arm is somewhat impaired by the sculpted shoulder pad.

The paintjob on Quinlan Vos is also quite nicely applied. While most of his garments are simple blobs of gray and brown, his tan tabard received a nice amount of weathering.

Quinlan’s face paint and markings are clean and neat, with the light yellow line applied over his face and left arm, which has a couple of dark red lines that I’m not sure are meant to represent scars or something else. Vos also has a five-o-clock shadow on his face that comes off as being a little heavy, but the overall look is fine.

The figure comes packaged with a green lightsaber and a speederboard. This device is actually made of two pieces, the board proper and the turbine engine. It has a couple of foot pegs for Quinlan to stay on top and a mount at the from to attach the lightsaber to the device. Now, this is not a feature that actually appeared in the TV show, but it does add some play value to the piece.

In addition to the speederboard, Vos comes with a plastic display base, his Galactic Battle Game card and a game die molded in blue plastic with white symbols engraved on each side.

I was pleasantly surprised by this version of Master Vos, but then again, my expectations were not particularly high when I bought him. I really like the articulation and the overall look of the figure, and even the speederboard turned out to be slightly more interesting than I had anticipated.
