Colossus

Colossus (15)

Sometimes, as a broad-focused collector, I indulge in what has come to be known as “The Long Game”. There are nuances and variations in the way each person plays it, but in a nutshell, you see something that you just don’t feel like paying the full MSRP at the time of launch, and you wait for the price to drop sometime in the future. Colossus PHCOf course, the inherent risk is that the item in question may never appear again, or it sells through or it even goes up in price, which was the case with this Colossus from the Marvel Universe Series 2.

Colossus was a 2010 release from the HAMMER Files series of figures and is also one of the very few characters that required completely unique molds to produce.

Colossus is very tall and buff, and has a series of horizontal lines etched all over his exposed metallic skin bits, except for the face and hair, both being entirely smooth.

Colossus has some extra costume elements in him, like the knee-high boots, bracelets and torso piece, which is of particular note because apparently the whole upper chest piece is a rubber attachment that goes glued in place. This seems to indicate that the plan was to produce some other costume variant for the character at some point in time.

Colossus (8)Articulation on Colossus is really good even by today’s standard, and consists of:

• Hinged peg neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Upper biceps swivel.

• Hinged elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Floating torso.

• Ball jointed hips.

• Upper thigh swivels.

• Double hinged knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

Colossus (11)As a whole, this articulation scheme works very well, even though there are some limitations at the shoulders imposed by the aforementioned rubber torso piece.

The torso piece on my figure is glued slightly off center, which is just the type of small imperfection that can gnaw at me for days, but even if that were not the case, the rubber piece is a little too small, which leaves a rather noticeable gap of silver skin running all around at ribcage height.

Colossus (12)The paintjob on Colossus is good but not spectacular. This release of the character sports a rather heavy wash over the skin that produces a decidedly dirty appearance, especially at the face.

The red costume elements display golden yellow markings shaded with orange for a much brighter finish, although the overall look is almost as untidy as it is on the skin.

None of Colossus’ hands are shaped to actually hold accessories, but he still comes with a very useful plastic display base and the usual paper envelope containing his HAMMER File documents, consisting of a printed message from the soviet FSV for SHIELD Director Norman Osborn and a personalized Superhuman Registration card.

I wish I had bought Colossus back when the figure was released, because the minor flaws in it would have been easier to overlook even at the full MSRP. Instead, having paid a little over that for this character I feel a little less forgiving, although I have to admit this is still a pretty fine action figure, warts and all.

Colossus is one of my favorite X-men. I’m kind of surprised looking at him now that I haven’t picked him up at some point. Not to the point I’d want to pay more for him though…
