Luke Skywalker in Bespin Fatigues (Black Series)
Hasbro released this version of Luke Skywalker as part of the third wave of figures from the Star Wars Black Series 6-inch collection early in 2014.
This time around Luke is attired in the uniform he wore in the Bespin scenes from The Empire Strikes Back, which required a completely new sculpture.
The uniform is very detailed and the face sculpt does resemble Mark Hamill; although the paint applications on some of the figures I saw at the store really detract from the likeness.
Luke comes with a non-removable utility belt that has a pistol holster and a hook to carry his lightsaber hilt.
The holster strap that runs around his right thigh does limit somewhat the range of motion on that limb but overall, the articulation is plentiful and well integrated into the character design, consisting of:
• Pegged hinge neck.
• Pegged hinge shoulders.
• Pegged hinge elbows.
• Pegged hinge wrists.
• Floating torso.
• Pegged hinge hips.
• Upper thigh swivels.
• Double hinged knees.
• Pegged hinge ankles.
• Rocker feet.
Each joint feels firm enough to hold any pose and Luke has pretty good stability when adopting action poses.
The paint applications on the body are deceptively simple, consisting mostly on a rather heavy wash to simulate the grime and dirt he may have picked up during his stay at Dagobah. The belt piece has tiny silver details painted on, and the boots were decorated in a much darker beige tone than the fatigues.
The hands and head pieces were molded from flesh-colored plastic and only the head sports additional painted details. They applied a dirty blonde color to the hair that doesn’t quite match the way it looked in the movie, but the real issue with the paint operations on this figure is the eye paint.
A lot of the figures I saw had their eyes misaligned, misplaced or both. It was possible for me to find one figure that looked right, but it took a quite a while to do so given the rather poor lighting conditions at the store.
As far as accessories go, Bespin Luke comes with a blaster pistol and a blue bladed lightsaber. The blade can be removed from the hilt, and then the hilt can be hooked onto the belt. Both weapons are well decorated with silver and black details.
Overall, I am quite satisfied with this version of Luke Skywalker in his Bespin clothes. Yes, the likeness could have been better, but in the other hand, it is no worse than previous figures made of this character.
