Halo 4 Master Chief (Series 2)

Master Chief H4S2 (8)

Master Chief H4S2 (13)One thing McFarlane Toys does regularly with their Halo lines, is re-issuing Spartan action figures as much as they can. This holds true also for Halo 4, where for Series 2 we get treated to yet another release of the Master Chief in his more recent set of Mjölnir armor.

The Series 2 Master Chief figure is almost identical in every aspect to the previous figures we got from Series 1, either individually packaged or as part of a larger boxed set. The only part where you can see any difference is in the random nature of some paint operations.

That said, the Master Chief mold is still a really good action figure design with a lot of nice details sculpted on the dark olive green armor plates, the black protective under-suit and the rich gold visor. The articulation model is the new streamlined design composed of:

Master Chief H4S2 (2)• Barbell jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders

• Hinged elbows with swivels above and below the joint.

• Hinged wrists with swivels above and below the joint.

• Barbell mounted torso.

• Barbell mounted hips.

• Pegged hinge knees.

• Hinged ankles with swivels above and below the joint.

• Ball jointed toes.

Range of motion is good overall, but limited at spots due to the armor design.

Master Chief H4S2 (11)The paintjob on the Series 2 Master Chief is good, with lots of gunmetal paint drybrushed over the dark olive armor plates to simulate wear. The gold color on the visor seems to be a bit warmer and shinier than in Series 1, but it might simply be a different batch of metallic gold paint.

The things that really sets this Series2 Master Chief apart are the accessories, the more important of which is the inclusion of a Cortana figurine, done in the 1/100 scale similar to the Halo Micro Ops line also made by McFarlane.

Cortana is made of translucent white plastic with blue decorations, and comes with a 2-piece base that allows her to be held in the hand of a figure or just sit on a flat surface. Even though the paintjob on Cortana is serviceable, she is still recognizable and looks fine from a distance.

As far as weaponry goes, this time Master Chief ships with a rail gun, painted in gunmetal silver with lots of shading washed on top. Also included is a removable peg to affix the weapon to the Chief’s back.

Micro Ops Cortana (3)In the end, I must confess that I bought this figure mostly for the accessories. This Master Chief mold is fine and all, but truth be told, this is how the Halo 4 Master Chief should have been sold since day one. So, yay for the Series 2 figure, but McFarlane Toys surely deserves an AFB red card on account of blatant double-dipping.

I've been collecting action figures since the original Kenner Star Wars days. Nowadays, I still collect pretty much anything that catches my eye.
