Nova (Marvel Legends)

Nova MLIF (7)

One of the more annoying aspects of the Build-A-Figure scheme, as a whole, has to be that not all of the figures required to complete it are equally desirable. For me, one of the characters I was least enthusiastic about from the Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends assortment was Nova.

Nova MLIFI am aware that he’s been around in comics for a while now, but the overall concept behind the character just did not thrill me that much. Also, the portrayal of the Nova Corps in the movie is far removed from the way it works in comics, which is precisely the source of inspiration for the design of this version of Nova.

Since I had already decided that I wanted the Groot BAF, I went on and bought Nova, even though I did not expect the figure to be as good as it turned out to be.

For a start, Nova is a complete retool of the basic male buck Hasbro has been using for a couple of years now. You can tell by the body proportions and the articulation design, yet each and every one of the pieces that comprise this figure show newly sculpted textures to simulate the armor panels as well as ports to attach some of the more distinctive costume elements.

The overall sculpture is quite detailed and I found interesting the way the shoulder pads were implemented on the figure. The articulation scheme for Nova goes like this:

Nova MLIF (2)• Pin & disk neck.

• Hinged shoulder pads.

• Pin disk shoulders.

• Upper biceps swivel.

• Double hinge elbows.

• Pin & disk wrists.

• Hinged torso.

• Swivel waist.

• Pin & disk hips.

• Upper thigh swivel.

• Double hinge knees.

• Pin & disk ankles

• Rocker feet.

One thing common to most of the more recent Marvel Legends figures is that the plastic Hasbro uses feels much more flexible than the one they used for previous assortments, but this doesn’t seem to affect Nova negatively. The figure has a good balance and the joints are firm enough to hold for extended periods of time without problem.

Nova MLIF (4)Nova was molded almost entirely in a blue plastic with some type of reflective material in it, very similar in aspect to the plastic they used for the Iron Monger BAF and the movie-style Iron Patriot armor. The shin guards, bracers, belt and head were made from a golden yellow plastic.

The actual paint applications on my figure were neat and clean although, as usual, it is advisable to take time and look for the better-painted copy at stores.

Nova is one of those characters that are not really suited to use accessories, so Hasbro gave him a pair of punchy hands. However, the package does include Groot’s right arm, molded from brown plastic and just the subtlest hint of green airbrushed on to simulate moss.

While I remain still largely ignorant of Nova’s exploits in media, I cannot dispute that Hasbro did produce a really nice action figure of him.

I've been collecting action figures since the original Kenner Star Wars days. Nowadays, I still collect pretty much anything that catches my eye.
