Luke Skywalker (Yavin Ceremony)

Luke Yavin BS (13)

Even though we do get a lot of mold reuse from the Hasbro Star Wars lines, I could not help but feel as if the licensee had “jumped the shark” when they announced that they would be including yet another figure of Luke Skywalker in this particular outfit so early in the Black Series.

Luke Yavin BS (10)We had already gotten at least a couple of versions of Luke in his ceremonial garment, one from the Power of the Force line and another not too long ago from the Legacy Collection, which provides most of the pieces for this Black Series release.

The new Luke Skywalker in Ceremonial Garment shares the exact same body mold with the previous version, but there are also a couple of changes that may or may not be an improvement, depending on your point of view.

The more obvious one is the head sculpt. While I don’t think it is a good portrait of Mark Hamill, it is a much better head sculpt overall than the one from the Legacy line.

Luke Yavin BS (14)The other change is subtler but it does make for a better-looking figure, the new Luke has a new belt piece molded with a proper holster instead of a simple loop to carry a pistol.

As I mentioned, the rest of the body is the same as the Legacy one, which means the articulation is comprised of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pin & disk shoulders.

• Pin & disk elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Swivel waist.

• Swivel hips.

• Pin & disk knees.

Luke Yavin BS (12)At the time of the release of the Legacy version, this articulation spread was sorely lacking ankle joints, but fast forward a few years and the overall articulation starts to look pretty decent in this time of budget reductions and corner-cutting in the production process.

The coloring on the Black Series Luke is also different from the previous one, since the yellow plastic used this time has a lighter color and the hair is now painted in a more sandy blonde hue. The skin color is still on the very pale side of things, but the overall appearance is much less waxy and goes well with the new hair color.

Yavin Luke comes with a good number of accessories: a lightsaber hilt, an ignited lightsaber, a sporting blaster and a medal. Except for the blaster pistol, all of the accessories sport some painted deco, which is nice to have.

Ultimately, the new Yavin Luke from the Black Series line does represent a noticeable improvement over the previous one, although it is still far from being the definitive version for the character as seen in the closing scenes from Episode IV: A New Hope. I would not rate it as a must-buy figure, but it is certainly far from being the worst possible purchase in this collection.

I've been collecting action figures since the original Kenner Star Wars days. Nowadays, I still collect pretty much anything that catches my eye.
