Batman (Arkham Knight)

During the marketing blitz surrounding the last Batman movie directed by Cristopher Nolan, the 4-inch action figures were less than stellar, to put it mildly, but in recent years Mattel has made efforts to improve upon those efforts.

The action figure I’m reviewing today was released under the DC Comics Multiverse line, which is aimed to adult collectors, if the spiel in the packaging is to be believed.

This figure is Batman, as seen in the Batman: Arkham Knight video game. It is yet another variation on the armored Batman costume, done in a style that seems plausible enough to be used for, let’s say, a movie or a live action miniseries.

The bat-suit features rigid armored panels and heavily-textured, flexible mesh bits, lending a fair amount of realism to the design. The figure sports a pretty posh, non-removable cape made from black plastic leather.

Even though the cape uses less material than it probably should, if they were shooting for a screen-accurate depiction of this piece, it has just the perfect size not to be a hindrance to the figure.

Articulation is the standard for these new Multiverse releases, consisting of:

• Swivel neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Hinged elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Swivel waist.

• Hinged peg hips.

• Swivel cut thighs.

• Hinged knees.

The pauldrons are soft plastic pieces glued on top and are not too much of a hindrance to the shoulder articulation but the overall range of movement on the limbs is rather limited, as neither hips, legs or arms can really bend at 90° due to the character design, and the lack of a biceps or elbow swivel seriously limits the amount of poses available..

The paint applications on this Arkham Knight Batman are pretty good, and the color palette consists of gloss black and gunmetal gray, with a couple of color touches courtesy of the tarnished brass utility belt and the exposed skin on Batman’s face.

Batman comes with no accessory at all, which is just as well considering that his hands are sculpted as closed fists.

I still have not played the game this version of Batman comes from, but overall, I like this costume design and I also think the figure came out nicely.
