Sandman (Marvel Infinite Series)

Sandman was another of the Spider-Man villains I distinctly remember from the old TV show. Even though his costume is rather unremarkable, his abilities are quite apt to be simulated in plastic form, so we got these figures of him in Hasbro’s Marvel Infinite Series.

In a rather unusual fashion, Sandman was released with two different paint variants and apparently, in the same quantities so neither one was significantly more difficult to obtain.

Sandman is based off the Luke Cage/Absorbing Man body mold, with a new head and new hands. While the head is a fairly standard portrait of the character, the hands are somewhat more interesting to look at because the left hand is molded as a spiked club, while the right hand is depicted enlarged and in the process of shifting shape.

Both these appendages are rather large, and therefore, heavy, which causes some stability issues on both versions of Sandman. The left hand in particular is so heavy that Sandman’s torso articulation shifts with it.

Speaking of which, Sandman has the traditional Marvel Universe articulation scheme consisting of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pegged hinge shoulders.

• Biceps swivel.

• Hinged elbows.

• Barbell mounted torso.

• Ball jointed hips.

• Double hinge knees.

• Pegged hinge ankles.

The lower leg sculpture limits somewhat the range of movement from the hips and the ankles, but overall, these molds seem to start to show some degradation, as a few of the upper torso joints are looser than those of older releases and if you factor in the extra weight from the forearms, Sandman has a very rough time standing up for extended periods of time.

The decoration on both versions is quite nicely applied, although the green shirt version has the more vibrant look. While the green/brown one is a classic, the sand-colored figure also looks quite striking so, I could not help but to purchase both in one go, and since they are in essence the same figure, I’d score them both equally, although feel free to add a couple of points to whichever version you prefer the most.
