Tycho Celchu (A-Wing Pilot)

Tycho Celchu (4)

Not too long ago, I managed to track down a few of the figures I was missing from Hasbro’s Star Wars 30th Anniversary Collection, and today I’ll tell you about one of them, Rebellion pilot Tycho Celchu.

Tycho Celchu (11)As it happens, the character was created by author Michael Stackpole for the X-Wing series of novels, and working backwards, the name was given to one of the background characters we see in the pilot briefing scene from Return of the Jedi.

Therefore, the figure depicts Tycho wearing A-Wing pilot gear; the jumpsuit design is very similar to other rebel uniforms we have seen on other characters and yet, the sculpture is unique to this release.

Tycho’s face is blandly generic with a head of unkempt hair, but the sculpted details on the uniform and gear pieces is quite nice.

Tycho Celchu (3)Being an older figure, Tycho Celchu has the full array of articulation we used to expect from the 3.75-inch line, consisting of:

• Ball jointed neck.

• Pin & disk shoulders.

• Pin & disk elbows.

• Swivel wrists.

• Floating torso.

• Swivel hips.

• Pin & disk knees.

• Pin & disk ankles.

Tycho Celchu (5)All of the joints work admirably well and allow Tycho to fit into the cockpit of all of the ships in my collection, despite the rubber straps around his legs.

These straps come separate of the figure and the ends connecting to the front and the back of the figure are keyed to ensure a proper fit. Also included are a couple of headgear options for Tycho, one being a padded pilot cap and a proper A-Wing pilot helmet.

Supposedly, the helmet should have gone over the padded cap but there was simply no way to do that and keep the correct proportions for the helmet so I’m pretty happy of the way the solved this, even though this also makes Tycho one of the very few characters from this line that don’t come with a weapon of any kind.

Tycho CelchuThe paintjob on this figure is very neat, and even though the pieces were molded in the final color of plastic, you can still see really nice decoration on the helmet. The only thing I did not quite like about the paint job is the pinprick pupils they gave him, but then again, that can be easily fixed if I decide to.

Lastly, since Tycho was released in the 30th Anniversary line, an aluminum coin was included with a portrait of the character minted on one side and the Rebel Alliance crest on the other.

Reviewing Tycho reminded me of how much I liked the articulation on those days, and makes me long for the return of more versatile 3.75-inch figures to the mass-distribution market.
