Qui-Gon Jinn & Eopie

With all the up coming hype for Star Wars Episode 1 in 3D, I’m hoping we see some Qui Gon love. In the mean time, I guess I’ll tide myself over with this. From last year, this Qui Gon & Eopie was a mail away to fill a gap in some collectors collections.

If my memory serves me correctly, this set was originally released in Europe. There were some limited ways to get them in the States. A local collectible shop had a couple at the time they came out.

What I wasn’t sure when I mailed away for it is what exactly I would get. I was hoping for at least an updated Qui Gon since he’s one of my favorite of all the Jedi. And….no such luck.

This is pretty much an Episode 1 era Qui Gon. He’s not the worst, but certainly not up to today’s standards.

This is obviously Qui Gon in Tattooine  “Disguise.” Well, if pulling on a poncho is a disguise. I liked the idea of poncho since it kind of hearkens back to Luke and the original Star Wars film. However, none of the soft goods cloaks have ever looked fantastic to me. This one is no exception. They all just look too bulky to me. I would have rather have sen this cloak made from stuff similar to what they used on the Vintage Collection Sandperson. Something a little thinner would have helped a bunch.

If you have seen any Episode 1 era Qui Gon, you know what to expect here. The front of his skirt is soft goods, but other than that, I’m pretty sure this figure is the same as at least one other one I have.

I normally don’t talk much about the packaging, but here it is ultra minimalist. A white shipper box with some text and really plain inner pack. No protective bags, just the pieces wire tied to inner cardboard piece.

The “star” of the set is of course the Eopie. Appearing in several places in the film, eopies seem to be the pack animal of the desert planet. Probably one of of the more “wildlife” intense of the Star Wars films, the designers spent a good amount of time coming up with nearly realistic looking critters.

Similar to Qui Gon, the eopie is a bit light on detail, paint and articulation. It does have four points of articulation, one at each of the hips. However, I’m not sure what you are suppose to with them. Without knees or ankles, the creature will not hold but one pose to stand up. Which is okay, but it ends up being a  statue essentially. I think it would have been better served with some neck or head articulation.

The paint isn’t horrible, it just comes off as a bit too clean. There is just a brightness to everything that makes it look too new. There are some nice gradients to the the creatures coloration, but the straps and saddle look painted on. The paint scheme, in general, reminds me a bit more of a Hallmark ornament than a Star Wars figure.

Overall:

I’m glad I passed when I had the chance to buy the import version. I feel I probably got a better deal this way. While not a great piece, the Eopie is a good creature to have around for any Episode 1 Diorama.

Unless, you want to show Qui Gon riding it (See Bellow). I think it will serve as either a tow vehicle for the podracers or having Qui Gon lead it some where. Cause sitting on it, he just looks comical.

Now, this is a really cool set. I’d wish it had been made available as a regular release just for the Eopie, but I still hope they bring it back next year, with all the Episode I 3D stuff.

I think it would be a long shot considering it only made foreign release originally. I would think the Ammo Wagon would be more likely. I can’t remember the name of that critter, though.
