Smuggler Lando Calrissian
The end of “Empire Strikes Back” left us all wanting more. Han is chilling in carbonite, and Lando and Chewie are taking the Falcon to rescue him. Lando apparently raided Han’s closet for a vest and Seinfeld’s closet for a puffy shirt.
Appearance:Yup, this is Lando. Taken from what has to be less than a minute of screen time. Buttoned up puffy shirt with a collar. What appears to be Han’s belt and vest. Han would never wear those shoes however. Lando was suppose to a be a card playing smooth talker. To me he just looks prissy. Did you see any other Rebel generals with a cape? The figure communicates this pretty well. I can almost bet you Chewie cleaned the toilet on the Falconwhile Lando was there. I was kind of surprised he had shoes instead of boots. Another thing that surprised me was the lack of detailing on the back of the vest. Most of Han’s had pockets back there. One of the things appearance wise that is a bit disappointing is the paint and joint at the collar. Being molded in black, the seam is very obvious. Molded in black? Yeah, that fooled me in the package. Fun: This would have been a fun figure, if it had been released between Empire and Jedi. Kids would have snatched them up. Cause it sucked having Lando fighting the Empire in a grey cap and his blue outfit. Also, I believe he appeared like this in some of the Marvel comics between the films. However, now, he’s just one of those figures that fills the gap in the collection. He’s just not that dynamic of a figure. You never actually see him in scenes that inspire you put him in an action pose. He’s essentially the Captain Stubing of the Falcon. Also, he comes with the standard coin and a blaster. Nothing else. Some re-used crates would have been cool. The blaster fits neatly in the holster, but doesn’t stay real well in either hand. Ball jointed knees are nice to allow him to sit at the controls of a ship. But does he need articulated ankles? I would have rather seen better elbows than ankles. That’s my next nit to pick. His elbows are cut joints. While better than no joints, they limit the poses you can put his arms in. Now the thing that really ticked me off. Three times while shooting the pictures for this, his head popped off. Just by turning it a little. Very Disappointing. Overall:Is Lando a great figure. No. Does he fill a gap that is twenty years old? Yes. (Ouch, that hurt to say.) Unlike well executed wave mate CZ-4 though, it’s like Kenner plopped some stuff together knowing we’d buy him just because we hadn’t seen him before. However, if you need a malt beverage spokesman for the Star Wars Universe, he’s your guy (check out the picture at the bottom). Engineernerd Score: 80 /100 |
